That problem was defined for them by the necessity to make the past justify a programme which seemed innovative, and failing this, to find other sanction than precedent. Simultaneously, two attitudes towards history were developed, each of which was put to use. First, the recent past with its tyrannous monarchy, its arrogant peerage, and its'unjust taws was brushed aside, as innova­ tions imposed on a free people by the Norman conquest, and appeal was made to a past more ancient, and therefore more hallowed, when men lived in a freedom the Normans destroyed.

When at last he took his pen in hand in 1648, he put forth an unpolitical book about religion. Yet within a few months after this, Winstanley was a communist. And not four years later, after having written some works of much depth and beauty, he concluded his brief literary career with the account of a remarkable communist utopia that is impregnated with the spirit of rationalism. The known details of Winstanley’s life help little to explain his thought. In 1640, he was thirty-one years old, and carrying on a small business in London as a cloth-merchant.
